Migraines
A migraine is usually felt as a throbbing pain on one side of the head.
Many people also have symptoms such as nausea, vomiting and increased sensitivity to light or sound.
Simple painkillers such as paracetamol or ibuprofen can be effective for relieving the pain from the migraine. However, taking too many painkillers could make it harder to treat headaches over time.
Migraines are thought to be caused by changes in the chemicals of the brain, in particular serotonin. Serotonin levels are believed to decrease during a migraine, which can cause the blood vessels in the brain to spasm and then dilate, causing the headache. Other causes can be hormonal changes, certain food items, environmental situations, emotions, stress and physical triggers.
Isn’t Botox for wrinkles?!
Botulinum toxin gets into nerve endings and stops the nerve being able to respond normally to an electrical nerve impulse. Whatever that nerve normally does, stops working. So, when facial expression muscles are injected, facial wrinkles are reduced. It was noticed by chance many years ago that people having cosmetic botulinum toxin had fewer headaches.
Botulinum toxin type A, or Botox as it is commonly known, is a purified neurotoxin (nerve toxin). It works by paralysing the nerves so that they are unable to pass on the pain signal to the brain. This reduction in the amount of chemicals released from the nerve ending interrupts the feedback pathway that causes migraines, therefore elevating the pain.
