Winter, Summer, Autumn, Spring: there is always a need to apply sunscreen.
Sunscreen acts as barrier to the skin, absorbing UV rays. There are two types of UV rays: UVA and UVB. UVA rays tend to cause ageing to the skin, whereas UVB rays typically cause sunburn. Without sunrays and UV rays, there would be no light. So even in the colder months of Autumn and Winter, it is still important to apply sunscreen.
No one wants to look older than they are, which is why you should always look after your skin by using a sunscreen with both UVA/UVB protection. Another thing you should look out for is the SPF, the higher the better! SPF 2-4 are pretty much useless, they only allow sun exposure for double the time that you would usually burn. For example, if you can stay in the sun for 15 minutes until burning, you will only be able to stay in the sun for 30 minutes.
Opting for a higher sunscreen, preferably SPF30, or even better, SPF50, blocks out the majority of UV rays preventing sun burn and ageing while still getting that glowing tan.
Don’t be fooled by the myths of high factors stop you tanning, they do not. They simply allow you to stay in the sun longer, without burning and developing skin cancers.
Here at Skin Sense GP Clinic, we supply a range of Sunscreens suitable for all skin types: pale, olive, Asian and black skin tones. All skin tones do tan, and can burn, no matter how dark or light they are.
Benefits
- Sunscreen protects you from harmful UV Rays which cause Skin Cancers
- Sunscreen prevents premature ageing
- Sunscreen reduces development of pigmentation or blotches on the skin
- Sunscreen enhances health of the skin, as they often contain essential skin proteins, such as collagen, keratin and elastin.
- Sunscreen can double up as cosmetics. Sunscreens are available in tinted shades, to match your skin tone (we recommend Obagi SunShield TINT), which can also act as a moisturiser and foundation.
Our favourite Sunscreen product is Heliocare SPF50. Heliocare products are clinically proven to protect the skin from daily challenges within the environment and helps to avoid signs of ageing. All products have a high-level broad spectrum UVA and UVB protection.
Heliocare products include both creams and gels, providing a soft and delicate layer of protection that has a pleasing subtle fragrance, unlike the typical chemical scent of regular sunscreens.
Heliocare products contain Fernblock, a powerful natural anti-oxidant and skin enhancer which helps with the protection from UV rays whilst providing moisture.
Stay safe.
